Get Prepared With A Backup Generator For the Harsh Winter Of 2012

DHY6000SE Backup Generator

DHY6000SE Backup Generator

The winter of 2012 is fast approaching, with temperatures all across the UK dropping dramatically for the first time today. Tonight is set to be one of the coldest this year, with temperatures dropping even further to give sub zero results. But this harsh winter weather won’t only just bring the cold, it will also have a detrimental effect on our electricity supplies, with power cuts and blackouts now seeming inevitable over the next couple of months. With many venerable members of the population, such as young children and the elderly set to be a risk from long, freezing cold nights without any electricity supplies to power heaters and lights to keep warm and safe, now is the time to prepare.

So how can you prepare for the harsh, winter weather on the way?
Genpower Ltd have a simple solution to help during those long, cold nights when the blackouts hit- which comes in the form of a backup generator. A backup generator will ensure that you have a constant and reliable source of power available to you when you need it the most, which will help you keep yourself and your family warm and safe over the next couple of months. Genpower offer a wide range of backup generators, from the smaller Hyundai HY3600SEi to power basic essentials to the massive DHY120KSE with enough power to run a factory!

Is it possible for the backup generator to start automatically in the event of a power failure?
Many of the backup generators available from Genpower have an ATS connection and functionality. It is important to check the product description to see. An ATS, or automatic transfer switch, is available to purchase separately from Genpower, and once set up will allow your generator to turn on automatically when the lights go out. This is ideal for the cold, winter months when going out in freezing temperatures and fumbling your way around in the dark to turn on the generator is not a practical option, allowing you to keep your home lit up and cosy during those pesky blackouts!

What is the most popular backup generator that Genpower offer?
The most popular backup generator that Genpower offer has got to be the Hyundai DHY6000SE silent diesel generator. This is the ideal diesel backup generator to help protect your family from being left in the dark this winter. With an impressive maximum power output of 5.2kw and a 10hp 4-stroke OHV Hyundai engine, this has become an unbeatable backup generator for home or small business use. The DHY6000SE has ATS connection and functionality as mentioned earlier. As well as this, the DHY6000SE features a sophisticated AVR alternator, allowing you to power sensitive electronic  equipment such as laptops, without the worry of their sensitive electrical components and circuitry becoming damaged.

Why should I get a backup generator from Genpower?
Genpower Ltd, based in the small industrial town of Milford Haven, have been the frontier for Hyundai power equipment in the UK for almost five years, with their experience of generators and power products going back a lot longer. Genpower keep in stock in the UK the full range of spares, for the Hyundai range and offer free technical advice on choosing the right backup generator for your needs.

How To…Start Your New Hyundai HY2000Si or HY3000Si Inverter Generator

Once you have received your new Hyundai HY2000Si or HY3000Si inverter generator, you will need to know how to start it properly. The two generators are virtually identically, the only physical difference being the model number on the front panel of the generator. The procedure for setting up and starting the generator is the same for both.

When you receive the generator, along with it in the box you will find a spark plug, spark plug spanner, 12v battery charger lead, small bottle of fuel additive- this is enough sufficient for 10 litres of fuel and is basically a preservative, caravan adapter lead, a full manual, an oil draining tube and a screw driver.

The first step of the procedure is to fill your generator with the 15-40 oil. So firstly you will need to use the screw driver to open the side panel. Once you have done this, put the side panel to one side. You will then need to remove the filler plug (A in figure 1), tilt the machine back on its side whilst removing the filler plug and filling the machine with oil. The filler plug is also the drain plug should you ever need to change the oil. Take your 15-40 grade oil and tip into the machine. The oil should be filled right to the top of the threads until it is just about to pour back out. After you have done this replace the filler plug cap.

Now that you have put oil into the machine, the next step is to look at the control panel. There are two switches on the control panel. One is the engine start and stop switch (B in figure 2) and the other is the efficiency switch (C in figure 2). To start the machine they can both be in the on position. To start the machine leave both of these switches in the on position.

The next step is to put fuel in the machine. It is important to use fresh, unleaded petrol. So open the fuel flap (D in figure 2) and remove the filler cap and add the petrol. If you are not going to be using the machine very often, the fuel will be in the machine for some time. If this is going to be the case, you can add the additive provided which acts as a preservative. Once you have done this, replace the filler cap and close the flap.

After this, you need to take a look at the fuel tap, as shown in figure 3. To turn the fuel tap on turn it vertically downwards and to turn it off turn it horizontally. To start the machine, leave the fuel tap in the on position. The next job is to prime the carburettor (E in figure 1). For a new machine, this could take up to 60 or 70 pushes because the fuel has to come from the tank, through the pump, through the filter and fill up the carburettor bowl.

Next you must look at the choke, located on the side of the generator. By pushing the choke to the left it will be in the start position and the right is the running position. To start the machine ensure that the choke lever is to the left.

So now the fuel tap is on, the choke is set, you have fuel and oil in the machine and both switches on the control panel are on. So now you can start the machine. To do this pull the cord until you feel resistance then let it go back in. After this, pull the cord out swiftly until your generator starts. Once the machine is running, put the choke lever to the right.

Your generator should now be running smoothly!

Get Prepared with a Hyundai Backup Generator for the Major UK Blackouts in 2015

2015 Blackouts- Prepare with a Backup Generator!

2015 Blackouts- Prepare with a Backup Generator!

On the whole the British population live  a very comfortable life, with nearly every house in the country receiving an unlimited amount of must-have essentials that we just couldn’t live without, such as running water and electricity. Over the past decade we have learnt to rely on these basics more and more and now the idea of one of them being gone a lot sooner than expected has sent a wave of fear up and down the British Isles.

Ofgem have hit a nerve recently by releasing a report stating that Britain risks running out of energy generating capacity in the winter of 2015-16, which is only 3 years away. This will lead to massive power shortages and blackouts all across the country, leaving the venerable such as families and the elderly at risk of being left in dark with no power or warmth for extremely long periods of time.

But not only will these power cuts cause a massive nuisance, the power shortage that hits Britain in just a couple of years time will cause a steep rise in the price of electricity- meaning that it will become harder and harder to keep your family warm and your house lit up during the harsh winter nights that inevitably lay ahead. Over the past five years, electricity prices have risen by a huge 200% and according to sources it is set to rise a further 14.5-19% a year, every year for the next five years- leading to a massive electricity bill that some just won’t be able to afford.

Avoid Using Fuel Containing Ethanol!

Fuel may contain Ethanol

Fuel may contain Ethanol

Every year, Genpower sell thousands of generators all across the UK. Now and again a generator will come back with a problem and our technicians will check the generator over and fix it where possible. From looking back at our records, we have noticed a problem that customers phone up with time and time again and its one that can be prevented easily- poor quality fuel used in the machine. One of the worst types of fuel that you can put in a generator is fuel containing ethanol.

Ethanol has been added to fuel by fuel companies in an attempt to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Ethanol has a high octane quality and so is a valuable component when making high octane unleaded petrol. But although adding ethanol to fuel does make it more volatile, it can also be extremely damaging to engines. It may seem to work perfectly fine in your generator when you first put it in, but once left to settle problems will start to occur. The ethanol will separate from the proper petrol in your tank and will react with any water that may be present. This creates acid. The acid will then get to work attacking the metal within the engine. The water will then cause corrosion where the metal has been attacked.

At present, petrol companies are allowed to include up to 5% of ethanol in their petrol. But with talk of the Government allowing them to raise this figure up to 10% in the near future for environmental reasons, panic is starting to set in amongst mechanics everywhere! One of the biggest problems when choosing the right fuel to put in your generator is that you don’t always know which fuels contain additives such as ethanol. You may do some research and find that a certain brand of fuel doesn’t contain any ethanol, but this information will be useless the week after as fuel companies change and try to improve their fuel so often.

So basically, do your very best to use clean petrol or diesel in your generator as this will help to keep your generator in perfect running order and will prevent problems such as these from occurring. And at all costs, try to avoid using any fuel that you suspect may contain ethanol or any such additive.
