Hurrican Bawbag leaves tens of thousands without electricity.

Friday, December 9th, 2011

As hurricane swept across Scotland and Northern England, thousands of homes, schools and businesses are without electricity as powerlines were brought down. The Scottish government have estimates some 60,000 homes are without power. Electricity provide Scottish Hydro said at least 50,000 of it’s customers were without power and it expected this number to get worse before it gets better.

Those homes reliant on sustainable wind energy haven’t faired much better. The Ardrossan Wind Farm in North Ayrshire is all but destroyed as the wind turbines caught fire.  Farms and small holdings in rural areas have faired better with many farmers owning PTO generators and standby diesel generators to ensure precious livestock are still adequately cared for in the event of power cut.

Looming energy crisis – Will there be power cuts this winter?

Friday, September 17th, 2010

We have seen a sudden increase in the sales of mains/generator changeover switches this week along with enquiries for standby diesel generators . Most popular this season are the Evopower SDG6500SS and the Hyundai DHY6000SE, both rated at 5kw, these machines will provide enough electricty to power your fridge, freezer, lighting, TV, PC, central heating pump etc. in the event of a power cut.

The UK finds itself in a precarious situation- due to lack of investment over the last 10 years, the continually increasing demand for more and more electricity and the advance of broadband, enabling more and more people to work from home and in fact make that home out in the countryside, the risk of power cuts and the consequences of these power cuts has never been greater.

How do I protect my home/office against power cuts?

A standby diesel generator can be installed into your home for around £1000 to £1500. This will give you the peace of mind that if anything happens to your power supply – be it from storm damage to the overhead cables, or from lack of generating capacity in the Nation Grid during extreme cold spells, YOU and YOUR family will be safe.

The installation is straight forward- Your local electrician will connect the 100amp Moeller changeover switch into your building’s wiring circuit between the meter and the distributio board, with an external plug for the generator to connect to. This would take 2-3 hours.

The diesel standby generator would ideally be set up under cover, with good ventilation and the exhaust vented externally. This could be achieved in a number of ways: 1. Have the generator located in your garage, when isn  use, oprn the garage door and wheel generator to door entrance. 2. Have the generator in a small lean-to shelter, protected on three sides. 3. have the standby generator inside your building/grage with the exhaust piped outside.

In the event of a power failure, the generator needs to be started – it is key start. The starting switch can be relocated inside the building and situated next to the changeover switch, if required. When the generator is running, flick the changeover switch from mains to generator and the building will now be powered by the generator.

With the generator running you will be able to continue almost as normal, with all the essential appliances fuctioning.

Hyundai Leisure generators – quick start guide

Hyundai HY1000SI, HY2000SI & HY3000SI

Quick start up guide

1. Fill petrol tank with straight unleaded petrol –(no premix with oil in petrol). Be sure

to use new petrol, as old petrol deteriorates over time.

2. Fill engine with SAE10w30 or 15w40 engine oil up to the top of the oil filler neck,

replace dipstick.

3. Switch both switches on control panel to ON.

4. Switch petrol tap to ON.

5. Push choke lever to start position (IMPORTANT: On HY1000SI this is to the

RIGHT. On HY2000SI & HY3000SI this is to the LEFT). The choke should be used

when the machine is hot or cold.

6. When starting with a new machine, or if it has run out of petrol: HY2000SI &

HY3000SI, push primer bulb fully in 30+ times to prime the carburettor. HY1000SI,

if starting from empty fuel tank, gently pull pullstart handle 10-20 times to prime the

carburettor. On all machines, you will see the petrol being pumped through the

clear in-line filter, continue pumping until the carburettor bowl is full of petrol.

7. If the fuel tank is full of petrol, on HY2000SI & HY3000SI, push primer bulb 5

times.

8. Pull pullstart handle quickly – the generator should start easily if the above

procedure has been followed.

9. After engine has started, push choke lever back to run position.

Warning – take care when fitting side cover as damage to choke lever may occur if it is jammed behind side panel.

Welcome to Genpower’s portable generator blog

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Welcome to the new blog from Genpower.

We specialise in petrol and diesel generators and are the UK distributor for Hyundai generators.

Our most popular products include: 5kw diesel generators, suitcase petrol generators, open frame petrol generators and petrol pressure washers.

One of the fastest moving pressure washers is the Diesel powered EPW3600. This is a very powerful pressure washer producing 3600psi maximum output at 18Litres a minute. With this sort of power, it makes light work of the toughest cleaning jobs. The advantages of a diesel pressure washer are good fuel economy, electric start, high performance, durablilty and portablilty, as it can be used in a location without electricity.  On the downside, this is a heavy machine, weighing 100kg, compared to a petrol pressure washer, like the Evopower EPW3400, which weighs half this amount, yet still produces 3600psi.

On the generator sales front, we have seen a big demand for the Hyundai DHY6000SE, which is proving very a very popular standby generator for both home and business. In fact we have seen an increasing number of small business owners installing these generators as home standby generators and buisness standby generators, ensuring that any loss in their electricity supply makes no difference to the safety and confort of their family or the profitability of their business.

A typical basic home standby would consist of the Hyundai DHY6000SE, connected to the household electric cirvuits by a 100 amp manual changeover switch. In the event of a power failure, the generator is started and the changeover switch changed from mains to generator. The home electrics are now being powred by the generator. A 5kw generator produces enough electricity to keep most homes running as normal, for example it would power the lighting, fridge, freezer, central heating poiler and pump and TV etc.

When running your home from a standby generator, it is important to remember which electrical items are heavy uses of electricity. As a general rule, anything witha heating element uses a lot of electrical current. For example, a kettle is 2000 watts to 2500 watts, a small fan heater is 2000w and an electric shower can be between 8000 watts and 12000 watts! Please keep this in mind when specifying your generator.

In future blog entries, we will add technical tips on running your portable power equipment – Please let us know if you need any advice.
