Generator Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in the News again

Once again petrol generators have featured in the news again this week for all the wrong reasons, following the power cuts in the Chicago area on Monday many residents had turned to petrol generators to provide power to their homes following the storms.

It was reported on Tuesday that firefighters had come across two potentially deadly situations. In the first situation a family were running their generator in their garage, the carbon monoxide seeped from the garage into the house, the result was 5 people aged between 14 and 54 were hospitalised as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s also thought that a nearby air conditioning system may also have helped to have contributed by drawing the deadly gas back into the home.

Blocks away at a second home, a house fire was started by an overheating generator that had set fire to some combustible material.

Keep safe, follow these few simple rules to avoid tragedy

  • Generators to be used outside away from home air intakes.
  • Keep the Generator air vents and intakes free of grass, rubbish and other materials.
  • Keep the generator on a flat surface, grass free is preferable.
  • If needs be extend the exhaust to a safe distance
  • If you are in a long term use situation of more than a few days, check the oil level everyday.

Automatic Transfer Switch or ATS

Many homes in many parts of the world use backup generators  or standby generators as a means of providing electricity to their homes in the event of power cuts and outages.

The ATS acts as a bridge between the backup generator, the home and the utility company. The workings of the ATS can be simplified as follows.

When the an electrical outage occurs the ATS signals the generator too start, once the generator is ready to start producing electricity, the ATS reacts by breaking the connection between the homes electrical panel and the utility company and then connecting the backup generator to the home.

Whilst the backup generator is supplying the homes electricity it is completely isolated from the utility companies electrical distribution system. The isolation is for two reasons, it protects the generator from being overloaded and stops energising of the service wiring.

When the mains electricity supply is restored, the ATS reverses the process, disconnects the link between the home and the backup generator and then reconnects the home the utility company.

Generator Welders

If you have ever wondered what exactly a Generator Welder is, well its quite simple, its a welder with a generator attached. Or to put it an another way its and engine driven welder. The engine driven welder or generator welder has they are more commonly known is the ideal machine to use when welding needs to be done but mains electricity is unavailable.

Generator Welders com in many different sizes and outputs, the most portable generator welder, can just about be picked up with one hand, though we’d recommend two. The biggest of machines may weigh upwards of 250kg and require a plant trailer to transport them. Welder Generators engines can be either Petrol or Diesel powered. The combustion engine then powers an AVR electrical generator. The electricity generated drives the welder itself. On many models you can run other power tools, depending on the total output and the tool in question in some instances you may even be able to tun the welder and an additional power tool simultaneously

A diesel welder is often noisier and larger than their petrol welder counterparts and usually more expensive, but the costs seen in fuel savings on a machine with heavy usage will make themselves evident over time.

Hyundai HY1000Si alternative to a Honda Generator

The HY1000Si is one of our best selling portable leisure inverter generators.

At only 13kg it truley is a featherweight. With a 950w rated AC output this tiny machine will happily keep the leisure battery in your caravan or motorhome charged.

Its integral inverter circuitty means that this machine will safely power your computer, TV or laptop.

Don’t make the mistake that this machine is light on features

  • Sinewave Output
  • Eco Throttle
  • Low Oil Shutdown
  • Overload Shutdown

And the best think about this machine is the price.

At well under £400 you will struggle to find another big name brand with this features.

Generators & Carbon Monoxide Safety

A recent tragedy in which a woman was killed by carbon monoxide given off by a barbecue highlights the deadly nature of carbon monoxide.

Carbon Monoxide is completely odourless , colourless gas, all engine driven equipment, generators, pressure washers, water pumps will give off carbon monoxide in  their exhausts.

Carbon Monoxide can kill you within minutes so it’s very important to follow a few basic rules to ensure your safety.

  • Never use a generator or any other engine driven equipment indoors.
  • Never use a generator or any other engine driven equipment in a partially enclosed space, this includes garages, workshops, sheds. Open doors and windows are just not adequate enough to halt a build up of carbon monoxide.
  • Only ever use outdoors
  • When using outdoors, make sure the exhaust is away from any building intakes.
  • If necessary close windows and block vents to prevent fumes being blown into a building.

Generator Sizing for Power Tools

Yesterday we took a look at some typical inductive household appliances and how the watts required to start and appliance is often far greater than the watts required to run an appliance once it has already started.

Today we will look at some typical power tools and see how their start up power needs differ from their running consumption.

Table Saw 10″ – running 1800w – starting 6300w

Bandsaw 14″ – running 1800w – starting 2500w

Air Compressor 1.5hp – running 2200w – starting 8200w

Flood Lights – running 1000w – starting 1250w

Submersible Pump 400 gph – running 200w – starting 600w

Centrifugal Pump 900gph – running 500w – starting 900w

Pressure Washer 1hp – running 1600w – starting 6100w

Sizing a generator to Household Appliances

Using a generator as an emergency backup power supply is an easy way to power some of your appliances in the event of a power cut.

But just what size generator do you need to run your electrical appliances.  Unfortunately it’s not as simple as my 800w microwave requires 800w so my 950w inverter generator will more than suffice.

First we need to understand how electrical appliances draw power, we can split them into 3 basic categories.

  • Resistive – incandescent light bulbs, these draw constant power. A 100w light bulb only ever needs 100w to turn and run. Doing the sums for resistive load appliances is pretty straight forward.
  • Capacitive – These are basically appliances that contain a lot of capacitors, such as Televisions, Hi-Fi Amplifiers etc.  The capacitors do the job of storing power like a battery, as time passes, the power drains out of them and the appliances may require a larger surge of starting current then running current to turn the appliance on. The longer the duration between off and on cycles the larger the current surge required. The shorter the duration the less starting current is required.
  • Inductive – Inductive appliances are those which use motors, transformers, ballasts and solenoids. When they are turned on they require a very much larger current surge to start as opposed to just run. Some examples of inductive appliances are microwaves, fridges, freezers, hoovers, fluorescent lights etc..

Inductive appliances such as fridges and freezers are also probably the sort of appliances that we most want to run during a power cut. As these are the most power hungry examples of appliances to start and run lets take a look at some running watts and theoretical required starting watts.

Microwave Oven 625w – starting watts 800w

Freezer 700w  – starting watts 2200w

Washing Machine  1150w – starting watts 2300w

Air Con 20,000BTU 2500w – starting watts 3300w
