Sizing a generator to Household Appliances

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Using a generator as an emergency backup power supply is an easy way to power some of your appliances in the event of a power cut.

But just what size generator do you need to run your electrical appliances.  Unfortunately it’s not as simple as my 800w microwave requires 800w so my 950w inverter generator will more than suffice.

First we need to understand how electrical appliances draw power, we can split them into 3 basic categories.

  • Resistive – incandescent light bulbs, these draw constant power. A 100w light bulb only ever needs 100w to turn and run. Doing the sums for resistive load appliances is pretty straight forward.
  • Capacitive – These are basically appliances that contain a lot of capacitors, such as Televisions, Hi-Fi Amplifiers etc.  The capacitors do the job of storing power like a battery, as time passes, the power drains out of them and the appliances may require a larger surge of starting current then running current to turn the appliance on. The longer the duration between off and on cycles the larger the current surge required. The shorter the duration the less starting current is required.
  • Inductive – Inductive appliances are those which use motors, transformers, ballasts and solenoids. When they are turned on they require a very much larger current surge to start as opposed to just run. Some examples of inductive appliances are microwaves, fridges, freezers, hoovers, fluorescent lights etc..

Inductive appliances such as fridges and freezers are also probably the sort of appliances that we most want to run during a power cut. As these are the most power hungry examples of appliances to start and run lets take a look at some running watts and theoretical required starting watts.

Microwave Oven 625w – starting watts 800w

Freezer 700w  – starting watts 2200w

Washing Machine  1150w – starting watts 2300w

Air Con 20,000BTU 2500w – starting watts 3300w

10 Things not to do to your Inverter Generator

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Sticking by these 10 rules will help you inverter generator have a long and happy life.

Do not use stale petrol.

Month old petrol might be fine in your car, but it’s not going to help your generator at all.

Do not start your generator under load.

In fact don’t even attempt start it with anything plugged in at all  just to make extra sure.

Do not apply a load as soon as your generator as started.

Give your generator at least two minutes just to warm up and settle to idle.

Do not let your generator run out of fuel whilst under load.

This can damage the internal circuity of your generator.

Do not apply heavy loads when running in eco-mode.

Try to increment the load in no more than 25% of the machines total output wattage or turn off the eco-mode.

Do not use the inverter generator or a sloped surface.

Try to keep it as level as possible.

Do not allow to get wet.

This is a piece of electrical equipment avoid getting it wet as you would any other electrical appliance.

Do not turn off underload.

Remove the load and then allow the machine to run for at least two minutes before shutting off.

Do not leave choke open.

Your machine only needs the choke open to start turn it off as soon as possible.

Do not overload your generator.

This can lead to costly damage.

Do not run  your generator if the oil warning light comes on.

Even just a flicker, remove any load, turn off the machine and check the oil level.

Pressure washers – what is a reduction gear drive pump?

    Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Petrol and diesel pressure washers have small 4-stroke engines, that will run at around 3400rpm. If the high pressure pump is coupled directly to the engine, the pump speed will be the same is the engine speed- i.e. 3400rpm. At this speed the pump is running at it’s maximum continuosly – a bit like drving around in 1st gear in your car!

With a reduction gear drive pump, the engine will still run at a maximum of 3400rpm, but the high pressure pump will be running at only 1700rpm, half the speed of the engine.  This type of pump has a greatly extended lifespan, due to it’s s;ow running speed.

The output is the same, as it features a longer stroke. The load placed on the engine by this type of pump is also reduced, so both pump and engine benefit from increased lifespan.

The new Hyundai HYW3600GB and Hyundai HYW3600DE-GB diesel pressure washer both feature the new Hyundai geardrive high pressure triplex pump, with brass head, ceramic pistons and thermal relief valve.
