Fuel Storage

Over time, the quality of fuel left in your fuel tank reduce. This can lead to starting issues especially when dealing with seasonally used fuel driven apparatus such as mowers or a camping generator.

Petrol can become stale, leading to ‘gumming’ up of the fuel lines and fuel pump and tank. Diesel can do a similar thing called ‘waxing.’  Fuels sold at you local petrol station will contain additives to help delay this process but even they can only do so much.

Here are a few tips to try and get the best out of stored fuel.

1. Try and keep fuel in an airtight container, an absolutly airtight container can help prolong its optimum life to up to 6 months before any significant detoriation begins to occur.

2. A higher octane fuel will detoriate at a slower rate than a less quality fuel.

3. Consider using a fuel stabiliser. A good quality fuel stabiliser used at the optimum dilution can help protect a tank of fuel for a few years.

Top 10 Pressure washer tips:

  1. Be sure to specify the correct pressure washer for the job. If you use a machine all day long and buy a pressure washer that is not designed for prolonged use, it will be worn out in a very short time.
  2. Ensure that all hoses are in good condition. If you have a leak in the suction hose, you could draw air into the pump, this will reduce the pressure and may damage the pump if the leak is bad enough, as the pump relies on water to keep it cool. If the high pressure hose is leaking, you will loose a lot of pressure and the pressure washer will be a lot less efficient.
  3. Filters- if you are using the mains supply, it is not necessary to filter the water into the pump. if you are drawing from a barrell or tank, it is very important that only clean water is used and the filter on the end of the suction hose is fitted and in good condition. If you draw water from a stream for example, it is easy to pick up dirty water- this will reduce the life of the pump.
  4. Never run the pressure washer without a water supply – the high pressure pump uses the water passing through the pump to keep it cool, without water, it will over heat and damage the seals.
  5. When starting the machine, squeeze the trigger on the gun to release the build up of pressure. Without this the engine will be difficult to pull start.
  6. Check engine oil and pump oils on a daily basis
  7. Change all oils every 100 hours
  8. Keep the pressure washer out of frost
  9. Always use fresh, clean fuel – petrol these days has a very short lifespan and after a couple of months it will loose it’s igniting properties and can cause starting problems – if the petrol pressure washer has been stored for sometimne, it may be necessary to drain the fuel tank and the carburettor and fill with new petrol.
  10. Always operate in the open air- do not operate petrol engined machines in confined spaces as there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Also if a diesel or petrol engine pressure washer is used in a confined space, like the back of a van, it will draw the exhaust fumes back into the engine, causing the air filter to clog and possibley severe damage to the engine.

Pressure washer problems and failures.

We sell 1000′s of pressure washers every year and we get a small proportion returned to us for warranty repair.
Today we received a Hyundai HYW2500 petrol pressure washer. The filler plug in the water pump was missing and the machine had been run for several hours with the plug missing, thus all the oil in the pump had been thrown out and the pump mechanism was completely dry with no means of lubrication, hence the pump failure.
The large majority of returns we receive back for repair are due to incorrect use or lack of servicing.
If the oil level in this pressure washer had been checked regulary, the pump would not have failed.
The same priciple applies to your car – if you drive around with no oil in the engine it will fail.
If a machine that we sell is used for the job in which it was designed and it is well serviced and the daily checks are undertaken it will last for many years, however, if these simple tasks are ignored, the lifespan is greatly reduced.

It is vital that daily checks are undertaken and the equipment is serviced at the recommended service intervals.

Pressure washers – Spring is here!

This week, along with the sunshine, we have seen a surge in demand for pressure washers. Both petrol pressure washers and diesel pressure washers are selling well. This is the time to get those driveways and patios brought back to life after a hard winter.

When customers call us to discuss ordering a pressure washer, there are a number of questions that keep coming to light. I have listed the ‘frequently asked questions’ below:

1. Will the pressure washer suck water from a drum? Yes, it will draw water from a drum, however, there are a few tips to make this process easier – If there are air locks in the suction hose, it can prevent the pump from drawing the water through, this is prevented by starting the water flowing by syphoning through the hise, before connecting it to the pump, this will then remove all the air from the hose and prevent air locks.

2. Will the machines work if I connect a number of high pressure hoses together? There is no real problem in doing this. You may experience a slight drop in pressure, but this will hardly be noticeable. The one thing that may be effected is the detergent suction effect. Under normal conditions, with the standard length hose, in order to use the detergent facility, you have to use the black, low pressure nozzle on the lance, when this is used, the detergent is sucked into the high pressure hose and sprayed from the lance. If a number of hoses are joined together, there is a slight pressure increase in the system and the detergent may not get sucked from it’s container. May I stress that this only happens if 2 or 3 hoses are joined together.

3. What is the fuel consumption of the portable petrol pressure washers compared to the diesl pressure washers, the EPW3600? The EPW3600 uses a 10hp diesel, typical fuel consumption is approx. 1-2 litres an hour, depending on the load and engine revs. With the petrol pressure washers, the EPW2700 will use approx. 0.75 to 1.5L an hour, where as the bigger machines like the EPW3400 will use 1L to 2L an hour. Ths big saving for the diesel machine, is in the use of red diesel, which is less than 1/2 the price of road going fuel.

As normal, the portable generators continue to be good sellers. The Hyundai machines are proving to be quite a hit in the UK and there is strong demand, especially for the 5kw silenced diesel, the Hyundai DHY6000SE :

Roland Llewellin

Welcome to Genpower’s portable generator blog

Welcome to the new blog from Genpower.

We specialise in petrol and diesel generators and are the UK distributor for Hyundai generators.

Our most popular products include: 5kw diesel generators, suitcase petrol generators, open frame petrol generators and petrol pressure washers.

One of the fastest moving pressure washers is the Diesel powered EPW3600. This is a very powerful pressure washer producing 3600psi maximum output at 18Litres a minute. With this sort of power, it makes light work of the toughest cleaning jobs. The advantages of a diesel pressure washer are good fuel economy, electric start, high performance, durablilty and portablilty, as it can be used in a location without electricity.  On the downside, this is a heavy machine, weighing 100kg, compared to a petrol pressure washer, like the Evopower EPW3400, which weighs half this amount, yet still produces 3600psi.

On the generator sales front, we have seen a big demand for the Hyundai DHY6000SE, which is proving very a very popular standby generator for both home and business. In fact we have seen an increasing number of small business owners installing these generators as home standby generators and buisness standby generators, ensuring that any loss in their electricity supply makes no difference to the safety and confort of their family or the profitability of their business.

A typical basic home standby would consist of the Hyundai DHY6000SE, connected to the household electric cirvuits by a 100 amp manual changeover switch. In the event of a power failure, the generator is started and the changeover switch changed from mains to generator. The home electrics are now being powred by the generator. A 5kw generator produces enough electricity to keep most homes running as normal, for example it would power the lighting, fridge, freezer, central heating poiler and pump and TV etc.

When running your home from a standby generator, it is important to remember which electrical items are heavy uses of electricity. As a general rule, anything witha heating element uses a lot of electrical current. For example, a kettle is 2000 watts to 2500 watts, a small fan heater is 2000w and an electric shower can be between 8000 watts and 12000 watts! Please keep this in mind when specifying your generator.

In future blog entries, we will add technical tips on running your portable power equipment – Please let us know if you need any advice.
