Top 10 Pressure washer tips:
- Be sure to specify the correct pressure washer for the job. If you use a machine all day long and buy a pressure washer that is not designed for prolonged use, it will be worn out in a very short time.
- Ensure that all hoses are in good condition. If you have a leak in the suction hose, you could draw air into the pump, this will reduce the pressure and may damage the pump if the leak is bad enough, as the pump relies on water to keep it cool. If the high pressure hose is leaking, you will loose a lot of pressure and the pressure washer will be a lot less efficient.
- Filters- if you are using the mains supply, it is not necessary to filter the water into the pump. if you are drawing from a barrell or tank, it is very important that only clean water is used and the filter on the end of the suction hose is fitted and in good condition. If you draw water from a stream for example, it is easy to pick up dirty water- this will reduce the life of the pump.
- Never run the pressure washer without a water supply – the high pressure pump uses the water passing through the pump to keep it cool, without water, it will over heat and damage the seals.
- When starting the machine, squeeze the trigger on the gun to release the build up of pressure. Without this the engine will be difficult to pull start.
- Check engine oil and pump oils on a daily basis
- Change all oils every 100 hours
- Keep the pressure washer out of frost
- Always use fresh, clean fuel – petrol these days has a very short lifespan and after a couple of months it will loose it’s igniting properties and can cause starting problems – if the petrol pressure washer has been stored for sometimne, it may be necessary to drain the fuel tank and the carburettor and fill with new petrol.
- Always operate in the open air- do not operate petrol engined machines in confined spaces as there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Also if a diesel or petrol engine pressure washer is used in a confined space, like the back of a van, it will draw the exhaust fumes back into the engine, causing the air filter to clog and possibley severe damage to the engine.
